CLEAN WATER
Water is the stuff of life. Our Clean Water Program works hard to protect and improve water quality, restore degraded streams, recover endangered fishes, and ensure that federal land management conserves rather than degrades the health of our rivers and streams.
The National Center conducts scientific investigations, pursues on-the-ground restoration and compliance projects, and works to ensure this nation is governed by laws and policies that protect the ecological integrity of our rivers, streams, lakes and springs.
We are vigilant in our efforts to bring credible scientific knowledge and practical experience into the policy arena to ensure that clean water, healthy habitats, and strong aquatic communities are protected and restored.
* WATER QUALITY PROJECT – working to improve the quality of the nation’s water through a variety of projects.
* WATERS OF THE UNITED STATES - the Clean Water Act protects "waters of the United State," efforts are underway to clarify this definition to increase coverage of the act.
* ROGUE BASIN PROJECT - implementing a pilot project to protect and enhance water quality and restore aquatic habitat in a region experiencing rapid urban growth and development
* HABITAT RESTORATION PROJECT - working to restore aquatic habitat and remove fish migration barriers that limit access to historically occupied rivers and streams
* U.S. FEDERAL LANDS MANAGEMENT PROJECT – working to ensure management decisions on lands administered by the US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management incorporate the best available science and protect the ecological integrity of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems
* GREAT BASIN-MOJAVE DESERT GROUNDWATER PROJECT - conducting scientific research in partnership with researchers at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Trout Unlimited to assess the impact of groundwater withdrawal proposals on the native species and aquatic ecosystems of the Great Basin and Mojave Desert
* WHITE PAPERS & PUBLICATIONS- Our published work regarding issues of terrestrial and aquatic conservation.
* Educational Research Opportunities – providing local high school Volunteer Research Assistants and Southern Oregon University Workstudy Program Assistants an opportunity for hands on field research experience helping to monitor water quality as part of the Bear Creek Macroinvertebrate Project.
